Faith Lends a Helping Hand
A Shoulder to Lean On
A lot of law enforcement officers credit their faith with their ability to continue to do the job each and every day. Giving it all to God and leaning on him throughout everything provides a sense of security for so many (Friedman 49). Good and evil are at opposite ends, and many officers struggle to see the gray area. There is good. And, there is evil. At the end of the day, we are all just people who are in a certain position; maybe criminals ended up where they are because they need to feed their families, or maybe it's because they struggle with temptation and bad behavior. One of the negative impacts of working in law enforcement is that you become very skeptical of others and can struggle to remember that there is good in the world. Secret Service ombudsman Bill Doyle states that after years on the job,“you come to the understanding that no matter where you are on the good vs bad spectrum, all they are is human beings. You can treat them however you want but you can see them for who they really are rather than what their title is. They're all human beings” (B. Doyle, personal communication, June 6, 2022). Understanding that people can change despite their prior behavior is something that law enforcement workers find to be tough. God reminds us that we are all created in His image and likeness, and we possess the inalienable traits of intellect and most importantly, free will.
